You crawl through a window into an apartment and find an old phonograph missing its handle. And after replacing the handle you play the music in reverse and watch as a husband mutilates his wife with an axe before coming after you. The music, the imagery, the violence – it gave me chills. It was remarkably eerie and disturbing.

Additionally in Downpour, the Hansel and Gretel scene once the stage props had been triggered correctly had me frightened to proceed. The entire mood of the game shifted, you were thrust into an absolute nightmare and I remember walking very slowly before climbing down that ladder to progress.

Those are two scenes that have stuck with me quite strongly since playing the game. The scenes above have great impact as well, especially in SH:3 and coming home to your apartment to examine your father’s body. But I do feel Downpour did an amazing job at recreating the eeriness and genuine tension-based horror I’ve come to associate with the series.

The music is probably what really did it for me during that part. It was hauntingly beautiful and felt very emotional. It was the version specifically from the game though, as the game version and OST version are a bit different. It’s stuck with me all this time and I can never forget how it had made me feel at that very moment. Something about it was just amazing….and yet so very sad. It definitely reflects a lot of the emotion revolving around James and May, as well as their past. The dialog was also chilling and sad to hear. Unforgettable to this day.
