Yeah, if taken from just the context of game design, the torture chambers and sadistic medieval shit everywhere is just spooky shit to unnerve the player without any real context. Just trying to make these places as fucked up feeling as possible. IF they wanted to explain it though, it’d be easy enough to retcon in a reason since I’m pretty sure none was *ever* given in the original games. Not even like a note from a researcher going “man it sure is fuckin’ weird that there’s a whole ass medieval torture dungeon behind the painting in the main lobby of the training facility. This castle is currently owned by The Connections, was once part of Umbrella and has a build in lab that makes a new form of the goop or perfected the E-series from RE7. I will bet money on that.
