I actually liked Quint Cetcham and Keith Lumley from Revelations and their entire story portion is exactly what you keep promoting in this article: tongue-in-cheek fun in the midst of all the horror and action. And yes, I actually did remember their full names 😀 Could probably name all of them, but then again, I’m a massive nerd. The only name I keep forgetting is the name of the final boss guy, I only keep remembering the faction, Il Veltro.

In defense of the characters of RE7, Lucas wasn’t there just for “one puzzle”, though I’m not sure if that sentence in the article was an intentional exaggeration. His insanity was a driving force for most of what was happening and he did appear time and again to torture both Ethan and Clancy, even if you didn’t actually personally see him. Also, as I think this only pertains to the main game and none of the DLC is taken into account, Lucas does have a rather large part in Not a Hero. In any case, as you do make a fair point of RE7 missing the series’ charm (and I can agree to most of the points here), I did actually think End of Zoe was the most fun I’ve had in the series in a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed almost everything in the series thus far, even Vendetta and Umbrella Corps, but that storyline was just hilariously amazing and prolly exactly what you meant was missing from the game. They really let loose with that one.

In any case, as a massive, long time fan of the series I thoroughly enjoyed RE7 and it jumped right into my top5 titles of the series, being only second to RE3. I also liked the fresh take on the series. While I did enjoy (most of) the fixed camera era of the series, the third person action shooters and (almost) all of the spinoffs despite style, quality or storyline, it was nice to see the series take another swift turn and try something new. Because for me, personally, trying new things with almost every title is exactly while I keep coming back. Resident Evil is definitely the most varied horror series out there with a title partly in practically every genre in existence, from card games to rail shooters to pseudo-RPGs. All we’re really missing is a platformer, though the “Ghouls ‘n Homunculi” game mode cloned from Ghosts ‘n Goblins in Revelations 2’s Switch port does kinda cover that as well. I also enjoy how we’re always somewhere different (though usually still end up in an underground lab of some sort) and I keep looking forward to where the next new title will take us. Like seriously, we’ve covered almost every mode of transport from buses to trains to airplanes and been everywhere from the nonexistent mountains of Finland to a bustling city in China. What I’m trying to say here is that series probably would be way more niche if it wasn’t for its immense variety.

Shit, that was a long post. But hey, a long article deserves a detailed comment, right?

Everything else was spot-on amazing. All Bakers are cheesy (especially Jack’s brother) – much more cheesy than Wesker ever was up to RE5, so I don’t know how you think that only the car scene was RE-fun. As for Ethan, he was shallow because he’s supposed to be your avatar. He’s not a *real* character.

This is a really intense reaction to an article on the internet on a smaller niche gaming site.

Those two are way more Resident Evil than the main game and address a lot of my complaints.

Of all things, this person should be complaining about resident evil 2. I love the new direction this series is taking. Making a more serious and subtle approach to the series is very interesting to see.

I actually expected not to like 7 but it became one of my favorites. Yes, Ethan is bland and silent beyond some quips. I feel that if he was mouthy or more talkative throughout the entire game people would’ve complained about it taking them out of the moment. Mia & Zoe are probably two of the most memorable characters in the recent series. I wound up enjoying them way more than Jake or Piers or even Manuella in REDSC.
I enjoyed my time dealing with the Bakers & playing the Daughters episode made my next play through of the main game feel even more tragic.
The game still has its cheese and over the topness, just like other RE’s.
For me the baseline of the games have always been about an infection. From all the different strains of T they’ve introduced, to the parasites from 4-5 and now the fungus in 7. Some sort of sickness takes over a location and your forced to try to solve and or survive it. I’d like to have seen a variety to the molded, maybe 1-2 more beyond the standard, crawling & big ones in the main game.
