Its threatening but memorable atmosphere is someting you wont forget. I agree in any way to that and I enjoyed it even in Operation Raccoon City. The series never managed to get out of RCs shadow, thats a pity indeed. I gues they could if they provide us some setting like the one in The Last of Us.

The series needs to get out of the shadow of Raccoon City because it still looms and was even present in the background of the last game. Ther will be a collective groan from both the professional and fan communities if they take a step backwards and head back to Raccoon City again. It really will be the last nail in the coffin and prove that the current team at Capcom has no ambition whatsoever.

Yeah that would have been a interesting setting to visit.

With the Japanese title, Biohazard, we get a openly vague description of what the game could entail save for that it has to do with some sort of biological hazard. There is nothing that hints or defines just what this game will be or where it will take place…

The American title, Resident Evil, is less vague and significantly different from its Japanese counterpart. It defines two things in my opinion. Resident, meaning “dwelling withing a place”. While not detailing what kind of place the way the term is used, to me anyway, that it’s here, with us, in place where we are or maybe within our own selves.

Then there’s evil. While kind of a ridiculous adjective to attache to this game as the mutant zombies, spider, dogs, gator, and whatever aren’t inherently evil there is evil in the people who did create this biological terror .

The title Resident Evil then, to me, has a more personal meaning. It’s evil where you reside; your home, your city. A much more confined space, a space where you are familiar. Not quite the global concept that the series has become.

So basically I’m say the original title of the game, Biohazard, the series has grasped that title pretty well even if it has lost it’s roots it can fit what you might imagine if you think of a biological hazard. The progression of the series does not fit what comes to mind when you thing of Resident Evil, something the first few games did very well, but not the last several.

So yes, the loss of Raccoon City is of particular note because it so far has been THE best example of the series and works well under both titles. Once 4 came around it started to lose the feeling of being Resident Evil and stronger as a Biohazard game.

With the first 3 games plus RE0, outbreak games and Operation RC what’s really left to see? I think the location in Spain in RE4 as a whole (village, castle, island) was just as powerful, personally. So much atmosphere in that game. Cool Locations are one of the RE series biggest trade marks and while I love the nostalgia of revisiting classic places from the series I always look forward to the new ones.

It’s a shame that RE6 was so dense that it didn’t have enough time to really flesh out some of the awesome locations. I think it would have been awesome to really explore the snowy mountains more in jake and sherrys scenario. Or to have had more freedom around china in general would have been great.

Honestly I really have no complaints about any of the locations in any of the games. They’re all cool enough settings to make me want to explore them. It’s the gameplay that is ultimately going to dictate whether or not it’s a memorable experience. CAPCOM, bring back non linear gameplay, puzzles, locked doors, item management etc etc!!!
