NEDRA

In the icy heart of Antarctica, where the unforgiving cold is both a setting and a foe, NEDRA is poised as a new entry in survival horror. Developed by solo developer Davit Andreasyan, the game blends the isolation of a Soviet-era research station with the cosmic dread of Lovecraftian terror.

Players step into the boots of Arthur, an explorer tasked with uncovering the mystery behind the disappearance of an entire Antarctic expedition. But the station is no ordinary ruin — it’s haunted by Frostwalkers, sinister entities that hunt by detecting body heat. Arthur’s survival hinges on a delicate balance: lowering his body temperature to near-hypothermic levels to evade these predators while ensuring he doesn’t succumb to the cold.

NEDRA

Drinking an iodine-alcohol mixture restores warmth but risks drawing the creatures closer. This dynamic forces players to walk a razor-thin line between safety and exposure, survival and sacrifice.

Exploration is key to survival. Scattered throughout the station are scarce resources — ammunition, tools, and vital supplies — that Arthur must scavenge to stay alive. But NEDRA offers more than pulse-pounding stealth and combat. Beneath the surface lies a haunting narrative of resilience and truth, where survival often conflicts with uncovering the station’s dark, ancient secrets.

Set against a backdrop of frostbitten desolation, NEDRA delivers a harrowing experience where every decision carries weight. As Arthur ventures deeper into this labyrinth of frozen fear, players must confront both external horrors and the harsh realities of survival.

NEDRA

Key Features

  • Immersive Atmosphere: A carefully crafted world that blends Soviet-era design with a haunting, Lovecraftian atmosphere.
  • Intense Horror Gameplay: Carefully balance intense combat with strategic stealth to survive nightmarish creatures and uncover the hidden truths of the station.
  • Narrative Depth: A story that challenges your perception of humanity, morality and the unknown, as you uncover dark conspiracies and ancient secrets.
  • Dive into a world where every shadow hides a threat and every sound signals danger.
  • The story offers three distinct endings.

You can watch the new trailer below and wishlist the game on Steam as well as keep up to date with the developer on X.

The Outlast Trials: Mother Gooseberry holding a glove puppet and looking menacingly down at the player.

If you’ve been playing Outlast Trials these past few months, you’ll be pleased to know that version 1.0 has started rolling out, taking the game out of Early Access. On top of that, it’s also become available on console, with ports for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5.

The latest patch notes on Steam also show that 1.0 comes with a ton of new content. For example, Outlast Trials now has a new map: the Toy Factory. There are also new MK-Challenges, new Legendary outfits, additional character customisation, and loads more. Not to mention all the tweaks and improvements that have been made to the game. Honestly, the list is too big to mention here.

As well as being out on consoles now, Trials is also cross-play, which means you can play with others no matter which platform you’re on.

The only downside to the game now being out of Early Access is the price has gone up. A previous post from developer Red Barrels encouraged people to buy it before March 5, saying it was going to go up once the new update went live.

At the time of writing, the game currently has a review score of “Very Positive” on Steam. Releasing in May 2023, it’s the third entry (fourth if you take Whistleblower as a separate installment) in the sick and twisted Outlast series.

This time, Red Barrels went more towards co-op gameplay rather than a focus on singleplayer. While that may have put some people off initially, the overall feedback is that Trials is yet another terrifying smash hit for the horror studio.

Check out the version 1.0 trailer below.

Crow CountryFans of low-poly graphic horror games like Lake Haven can now look forward to the release of developer SFB Games’ latest title, Crow Country.

Set in the 1990s and inspired by horror franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Crow Country follows the story of Mara Forest in her quest to find Edward Crow, the owner of a decrepit amusement park of the same name.

Adam Vian, creative director at SFB Games, states about the game:

It’s not as much of a departure as you might think. Crow Country is a narrative-focused atmospheric game about exploring a single location, solving puzzles, and unlocking secret rooms. It’s just such a perfect, satisfying balance of ingredients. You have to engage your brain, you have to think ahead, you have to make decisions, you can make mistakes. It’s all about getting just the right amount of player agency within defined parameters.

Vian adds:

The environments are fairly detailed, and most objects have some kind of texture on them. When combined with the various camera filters, it ended up evoking the lush pre-rendered background art seen in PS1 Final Fantasy and Resident Evil games. Quite honestly, this happened by accident… and now it’s become my USP.

Crow CountryThe game features an eerie soundtrack reminiscent of Silent Hill 2, as the player first navigates into the Crow Country theme park. Crows are picking at a corpse on the ground, a nod to the infamous visuals in Resident Evil 1. The theme park itself is reminiscent of Heather Mason’s experience in Silent Hill 3, which happens to be one of Vian’s favorite games.

The game’s website states:

The year is 1990. Edward Crow has disappeared. The owner of ‘Crow Country’ (a small theme park in the rural outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia), he has not been seen since he unexpectedly shut down his park two years ago. The silence is broken when a mysterious young woman named Mara Forest ventures into the heart of the abandoned theme park in order to find him. Are the disturbing rumours about Crow Country true? Who, exactly, is Mara Forest? Why did Crow really shut down his park?

Crow Country’s story explores reckless human greed and the idea of an unforgivable sin.

Features an ‘Exploration Mode’, for those who wish to enjoy the game without being attacked.

Crow CountryAccording to Vian, the player can utilize the D-pad for tank controls, or the analog stick for modern controls. Featuring a variety of monsters, the player can expect to be attacked by writhing piles of sludge, zombie-like creatures of varying sizes, and spiders, which burst out of a vent. The game takes inspiration from the zombie dogs jumping through the window in RE1 and also features nasty gray monsters with abnormally long limbs.

You can pre-order your copy of Crow Country and try out a free demo for PS5 via PSN or PC via Steam. Be sure to let us know what you think if you give the game a whirl.

Alisa

After releasing on PC at the end of 2021, indie developer Casper Croes’ Alisa became a bit of a cult hit, with success among the retro survival horror crowd, since the game plays very closely to a PS1-era horror game, complete with tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds, and it does so lovingly and authentically.

After continuously improving the game since then, including releasing a Director’s Cut as of last year, Alisa is finally headed to consoles very soon, and will be playable on PS4/PS5, Xbox consoles, and Switch as of February 6th.

AlisaWhile the game was developed on a very old version of Unity and porting the game to run on consoles was more difficult than most modern games would be, the developer and porting studio have assured that they worked tirelessly to make everything run, look, and feel right on consoles, including running at a 480p native resolution for added authenticity (with a 240p option on the way).

On top of faithfully porting the game, a modern control scheme was also added for those who are adverse to tank controls, just adding some further options for more accessibility.

AlisaThe game is available to wishlist on Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation right now, and the price is set at $17.99 for the Switch version, and will likely be the same for other consoles, though it may vary slightly between regions and consoles.

If you’re already a fan of the game, now you’ll have some new ways to play, and if you’ve never checked out Alisa before, you’ll now be able to sink back into the world of classic survival horror very soon!

Outlast Trials: a creepy room with mannequin heads and full dolls.

If you still haven’t played The Outlast Trials, it’s currently discounted on Steam. However, if you’ve been waiting for the console ports to be announced, you’re in luck. At this year’s The Game Awards 2023, developer Red Barrels revealed that the new Outlast game will be coming to PlayStation and Xbox on March 5, 2024.

More specifically, it’ll be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, so if you’re still on previous-gen hardware, you won’t have to miss out.

No mention of it coming to Switch yet, but given that the previous installments did eventually get released on Nintendo’s hybrid console, it’s fair to assume Trials will get a port as well. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the studio has confirmed that the game will be “cross-play without cross-progression.”

Although Outlast Trials wasn’t up for any nominations, this year has been pretty good for horror fans at The Game Awards. Alan Wake 2 took home three awards, including Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and Best Game Direction. It was even up for Game of the Year, up against the likes of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Resident Evil 4. Baldur’s Gate took home the trophy in the end.

We also learned about a new horror game coming from the minds of Hideo Kojima and Get Out director Jordan Peele, as well as being treated to a new trailer for Hallblade 2. Outlast Trials has, however, been nominated for a number of categories at the much smaller Horror Game Awards, which will be taking place on December 16.

Drowned Lake announcement

We got our first glimpse at a new horror fishing game called Drowned Lake at today’s PC Game Show. Now in development, the game appears on a whole new level compared to previous attempts to mix the two genres.

Drowned Lake takes place in the forests of Brazil and follows the mysterious disappearance of a local man near the eponymous lake. The game aims to bring several elements of Brazilian folklore to the story and incorporates some great-looking live-action footage to help tell the story.

The new reveal trailer shows some extremely creepy live-action shots of forests and rivers of South America with a distinctly unique vibe. When it later cuts to first-person gameplay, it blends the two nearly seamlessly. The nautical horror elements here evoke a unique mood, combining Lovecraftian aesthetics with the visuals of the Brazilian forest.

The gameplay ranges from actual fishing and dredging in the rivers, first-person exploration and puzzle-solving, and even some stealth elements, among the live-action narrative sequences that tell the story from three different perspectives.

Drowned Lake is being developed by a collective of game developers across Brazil, calling themselves Monumental. The game looks to expand a previously-made teaser/proof-of-concept game made for a game jam last year and make it into a full-length title. This will be Monumental’s second major horror game release after their game TELEFORUM released on Steam earlier this year to glowing reviews.

You can wishlist the game on Steam right now and follow the developers on X (Twitter) for future updates. We will keep track of the game’s development progress and can’t wait to see more once the developers are ready to share.

Be sure to watch the full extended reveal trailer for Drowned Lake below.
