Todat Vertigo Games revealed the release date for The 7th Guest VR during the pre-show to this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event. The 7th guest VR has been announced to come just in time for Halloween on October 19th.

The original 7th Guest game was an interactive movie puzzle adventure game, produced by Trilobyte and originally released for PC by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in April 1993 and was one of the first PC games to be released only on CD-ROM. The game is a horror story told from the unfolding perspective of the player, as an amnesiac.

The 7th Guest

The new VR version throws you right into a haunted mansion where you talk to people of the ghost persuasion.

The implementation of the characters in the world looks very interesting. According to Wikipedia, this is done using Volumetric Video, which is going to be very interesting to experience.

This is the official description of the game:

The iconic mystery game that chilled you to the bone in the 90s, the 7th Guest, has been brought back to life with cutting-edge VR technology that delivers an atmospheric and haunting story. Explore the foreboding mansion, solve challenging puzzles, and uncover its dark secrets.

The 7th Guest VR is the ultimate mystery adventure, and it’s time for you to experience it for yourself. Six guests have been welcomed to the foreboding mansion. But something sinister is at play…

7th Guest VR will be available on PC via Steam, Meta Quest, and PS VR2 on October 19th, 2023.

In the meantime, you can check out the brand-new release date trailer below.

Fractured Sanity

Fractured Sanity is a VR Survival Horror Title developed by Brazilian indie studio United Games.

The game sends you into an asylum infested with Ghouls that try to kill you while you have to solve interactive puzzles, so you’ll need to keep your wits about you if you want to make it out alive.

According to the studio, the game will be a “short but intense story” that involves spooky experiments by psychologist Dr. Matthew Simmons, whose intention is to split people’s psyche into the three parts Sigmund Freud proposed in his theories: the id, the ego, and the superego, hence the game’s name. As you progress through the game, you’ll discover the gruesome consequences of these experiments and the terrifying results they produce.

Fractured Sanity

While the graphics aren’t exactly cutting-edge, Fractured Sanity has a lot going for it with its gripping atmosphere and a team that seems to have poured its heart into the project. Add VR on top and you have a potentially great little survival experience to look forward to.

Fractured Sanity will release on March 28th on Steam and the Oculus App Lab.

Until then, you can check out the official trailer right here:

Half Life: Alyx - Levitation

Half-Life: Alyx has been a delight for modders since its launch in early 2020. Now, an upcoming mod by FMPONE and Corey Laddo, titled Levitation, has debuted an 8-minute-long gameplay video at the PC Gaming Show.

You can tell a mod has received some attention when it gets a spot at one of the year’s major video game presentations. Half-Life: Alyx – Levitation has done just that. And boy, as a fan of the original game, this looks very promising.

Corey Laddo and FMPONE apparently put a lot of effort into making this feel as official as possible, going as far as even having Rhys Darby, who voices Russel in Half-Life: Alyx, reprise his role as the quirky inventor in your ears. The mod’s story is based on the main game as well, with Alyx, “searching for a pair of rebels gone rogue.”

The gameplay video shows Alyx fighting her way through a highly detailed quarry, in which she has to fight Combine, manhacks, and even a strider.

According to the developers, the campaign is expected to be 4 to 5 hours in length, which is almost a third of the original game. That’s quite remarkable for a mod.

Half-Life: Alyx – Levitation is set to release on the Steam Workshop in 2022.

Here is the gameplay video you all came here for:

Doom 3 fans rejoice, we can finally experience the game in all its glory in the most immersive way possible through the magic of VR.

Playing Doom 3 in VR was one of the features promised in the original Kickstarter project for the Oculus Rift way back in 2012. Unfortunately, the feature was never fully realized, as the relations between id Software and Facebook/Oculus drifted apart over the years. So, the folks at Doom3Quest took it upon themselves to pick up that slack and have made the game fully playable on Oculus Quest and Quest 2.

Just to clarify, you will still need to own the full game on Steam, and will have to transfer the files over to your Quest to play the game. Additionally, the VR feature will not run with the BFG Edition of the game, only the standard version, available here, which is only $4.99 at normal price.

To play the game on your Quest headset, you’ll need to install the Doom3Quest app through SideQuest and then transfer several of the key game files over to your headset afterward. You can find the full instructions for installation as well as further information at Doom3Quest.com

The other Doom games as well as the Quake series and Return to Castle Wolfenstein have already been ported over to the Quest headsets recently and are also available on SideQuest for free. These older games come packaged with the shareware versions of each game, requiring a similar transfer of the legally purchased game files from your PC to play the full games in VR. If you haven’t cracked open the potential of your Quest headset with SideQuest yet, there’s a goldmine of free or nearly-free content there that only requires a few small extra steps to get it set up.

You can view some footage of Doom 3 running in VR below. Be sure to get it installed on your Quest headset today to finally experience one of the best horror FPS games of all time in VR!

Bioshock Mod for Half-Life: Alyx Lets You Return to Rapture https://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/bioshock-mod-for-half-life-alyx-lets-you-return-to-rapture/ https://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/bioshock-mod-for-half-life-alyx-lets-you-return-to-rapture/#disqus_thread Sun, 25 Oct 2020 14:21:14 +0000 https://www.relyonhorror.com/?p=92295 Now is the best time of the year to abandon society for a vacation under the sea with Return to Rapture.

A new Bioshock-themed custom map for Half-Life: Alyx lets you dive back down under the sea in Return to Rapture, and it’s pretty great!

It’s been a while since I had last played Half-Life: Alyx. Why? I can’t honestly tell you, since the game is an absolutely outstanding experience in my book. But then I heard there’s a new mod in town for Alyx, and it involves Bioshock. So, off to the Steam Workshop page of Half-Life: Alyx I went, and lo and behold, there it was: Return to Rapture.

Made by Steam user wim.buytaert.1988, Return to Rapture is probably the most ambitious mod I have seen to date for Alyx. If you have played Bioshock, this will instantly feel very familiar.

Just like in the original, you start out at a lighthouse out on the ocean, after your plane has crashed. You then proceed to make your way down an elevator, in which charismatic, social architect Andrew Ryan, delivers his iconic introduction to Rapture – a city, built underwater as a refuge from society for the wealthy elites in a post-World War II world.

Admittedly, Return to Rapture’s intro isn’t as pompous and impressive as Bioshock‘s, if you compare them side by side, but it still carries the same spirit and nicely manages to evoke that good ol’ nostalgic feeling.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this mod doesn’t look good, though. Yes, some areas are still visibly a work in progress and lack some more refined details to more closely resemble its inspiration. But let me be clear, most of what you explore during your stay in this version of Rapture looks absolutely magnificent. Most rooms are packed with small playful details and ideas. Screenshots really don’t Return to Rapture justice, though. Just like all VR games, you have to play it to fully experience it.

Familiar gameplay elements return, like the Vita Chambers, which require you to solve a small multi-tool puzzle to unlock them. As in the original game, the chambers serve as respawn-points after you drown, burn, get squished, crushed or shot. You can, however, still save manually at any point.

At various points, you will also find audio diaries, which require you to put a floppy disk into a device to listen to them. These snippets further help to shape the tense and foreboding atmosphere of the mod, which the original Bioshock was famous for.

What I found an especially neat idea was the introduction of Little Sister machines. These apparatuses are reminiscent of bottle deposit machines, as they prompt you to drop junk into them. In return, you may be rewarded with resin – the base game’s resource to upgrade weapons. It’s comforting to know that even so far beneath the sea, somebody is looking out for the environment.

Another new addition are vending machines that remind me of old jukeboxes. These require you to find a white key card, which you can then insert into the machine. After choosing one of the many buttons to press, a random item will appear. This could be anything from some useful ammo to a pretty, but not very useful little tiger statue.

I’ve only played about an hour of the mod so far but am already looking forward to seeing more new chapters of Bioshock in the future. I will always gladly Return to Rapture.

Now, would you kindly play the mod for yourself?

Layers of Fear VR

Bloober Team’s breakout horror game is now playable anytime and anywhere. Layers of Fear VR has launched for the Oculus Quest.

Available now for $19.99 on the Oculus Store, Bloober Team brings their 2016 psychological horror tale to the standalone VR headset, reworked to take advantage of the additional layers of interactivity and immersion afforded to it by the medium. Layers of Fear VR previously released on Windows PCs, and before that, a streamlined version of the game called Layer of Fear: Solitude for the now defunct Google Daydream.

“After a successful reception of Layers of Fear VR on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, it was only natural to bring the game to Oculus Quest. The standalone nature of the headset allows for even greater immersion and I believe Layers of Fear VR is now scarier than ever before. Having said that, we have even more in store planned for VR fans” said Piotr Babieno, Bloober Team CEO.

Layers of Fear sets players in a Victorian-era mansion where they’re forced to endure nightmare after nightmare while trying to piece together the tragic past of a painter. I’ve yet to play the VR version, but I imagine the perspective pairs very well with Blooder Team’s penchant for imaginative and surreal visuals in their games. Here’s hoping after they release Observer System Redux that they treat us with a VR version of that game as well.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead IP has a few ups and downs over the last year in the land of video games. Telltale’s The Walking Dead was nearly killed off before completion and Overkill’s The Walking Dead was a massive bomb. Today, though, Skydance Interactive and Skybound Entertainment are hoping that their latest game will turn the tide and bring the IP back from the dead.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners has launched today on Steam and the Oculus Store. This new VR horror title sends players to the city of New Orleans. The game is entirely physics based, meaning combat is realistic and violent. Players confront both zombie hordes and fellow human survivors in New Orleans while looking for supplies and completing missions. This isn’t just a series of mini-games; Saints & Sinners features a single player story campaign.

“With The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, we set out to create an experience that players and fans could fully immerse themselves in, which you can’t get from playing a console or mobile title,” said Adam Grantham, Creative Director at Skydance Interactive. “We wanted to give players an original story that truly belonged within The Walking Dead universe, from the environments, the narrative and the combat to make them feel as if they were truly living in this gruesome world.”

Skydance Interactive’s innovative approach to VR offers players a new way to live survival horror in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, by taking physicality and motion into account with players’ actions, allowing for a deeper interaction between the player and their environment. Scale buildings to ambush enemies from above, hold down a walker’s head to rip a knife out of its skull or attack from a distance with throwing weapons, bows and long-range firearms. Players can also choose from an arsenal of weapons or craft their own to fit their play style and survive their way. Physics-based combat turns every swing of an axe or jab of a knife into not just one of clever planning, but of physical effort to overcome enemies.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is available now on PC in $39.99, $49.99, and $149.99 editions that feature extra content. A PlayStation VR version is due this spring and an Oculus Quest version later in the year.

Chained: A Victorian Nightmare

An interesting game debuted on Steam recently from MWM Interactive called Chained: A Victorian Nightmare. In the game, you can relive Charles Dickens’ classic tale of A Christmas Carol, this time in virtual reality. That’s not all, however. The creators have also decided to modernize and improve the story, transforming it into much more of a nightmarish experience than it was in its original form.

According to the developers:

This is a haunting VR adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, A Christmas Carol, that puts you at the center of the story. It’s time to disbelieve your senses. Sit back and prepare to confront your past, present and future, in this bone-chilling journey of self-discovery. Heed the spirts warnings as your future is yet unwritten.

The creators call the game a terrifying interactive experience. In it, the player takes on the role of an active observer whose task is to survive the horrific spiritual spectacle, as they are forced to confront their past, present and future.

Chained: A Victorian Nightmare was developed by Justin Denton (who also directed the game), creator of Legion’s immersive experience for the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, and produced by Ethan Stearns of MWM Interactive. To play Chained: A Victorian Nightmare you must equip the Valve Index, HTC Vive or Oculus Rift goggles. The game is currently priced at $5.99 on Steam.

Check out the launch trailer below.

Arizona Sunshine

Arizona Sunshine from the Dutch publisher and developer Vertigo Games is coming out on December 5 for the Oculus Quest. The virtual reality game also previously released for the PC and PlayStation 4. According to the developers, they needed to build the Oculus Quest version of the game from scratch.

The reason for this is to get Arizona Sunshine working on the Snapdragon 835-soc, which is in the stand-alone VR device. As a result, there is no cross-play support between Arizona Sunshine on the Oculus Quest and other platforms. The game also looks graphically less detailed than the versions for the PC and PlayStation 4, according to previously released screenshots.

The game is currently selling for $35.99 on the Oculus Store. The Damned DLC for the Oculus Quest will release later, but when this will happen is not yet clear.

Here are a few key features according to the Oculus Store:

  • Handle, fire, and reload over 25 different weapons with real-life movements
  • Explore huge environments including deserts, canyons, and mines
  • Full-size campaign
  • Co-op multiplayer: Join a friend in campaign mode or Horde mode (up to 4 players)

Oculus Quest owners can also play the PC version of Arizona Sunshine by using the Oculus Link software that has been available as a beta since last week. For this to work, you must connect the headset to your PC with a compatible USB 3.0 cable. The PC version of the zombie game currently has a 66% discount and will cost you $13.59 on Steam.
